The 2 a.m. Sheet

Where your shut-offs are, and who to call. Fill it in once, today. Keep it where you’ll find it in the dark.

Two US Letter pages, PDF. Free, no email needed. Print at 100% and fill it in with a pen.

FRONT · IF SOMETHING BREAKS TONIGHT
  • Water main shut-off: where it is, how to get there, how to turn it off, and three photos to take
  • Gas shut-off: or “no gas service”, with what to do if anyone smells gas
  • Breaker panel: where it is, and when nobody should touch it
  • What a plumber or tech will ask: water heater, sewer or septic, water supply, heat and AC, lock brand (never the code)
BACK · YOUR PEOPLE
  • Vendors by trade: first choice and backup, and whether each takes night calls
  • Cleaners in order: primary and backup
  • Local contact: who can get there in person, and whether they have a key
  • Your spending limit and your county’s rules to check
  • A cut-out guest card

Two safety rules on the sheet

  • If anyone smells gas: get everyone out, don’t flip switches or use a phone inside, and call 911 or the gas company from outside. Never tell a guest to touch the gas valve.
  • Water near the breaker panel, smoke, a burning smell or sparks: nobody touches the panel. Get out and call 911.

The sheet is useful whether or not you ever use NightKeeper. If you do, everything on it is what setup asks for, so you’ll be done in minutes.
